Raising Environmental Awareness
Raising Environmental Awareness

Past experience from Iran and other countries has shown that the more environmentally conscious we become as a diverse group of people, the more we can change our lifestyles, our attitudes and behaviors vis-à-vis our natural habitat. Regular collection of waste along mountain trails in north Tehran by environmental groups and nature lovers has resulted in more public awareness and hence fewer incidences of garbage disposal. Most hikers and weekend revelers have little environmental knowledge and usually only recognize those environmental problems with which they are more closely in contact with, such as air pollution or presence of garbage on land or in the water. The fate of endangered species, the state of habitat destruction, and the values of conservation of our country’s natural heritage are not directly linked to their livelihood. At PWHF we try by various means to promote public awareness of environmental problems of our country and of the planet. One of our most important activities is to show the organic relationship between the health of the environment and our own. Our educational activities include: distributing of brochures and posters, placing environmentally conscious billboards, publishing books and other educational material for various age groups, press releases, helping with the production of radio and television programming, documentary films, and using the cyber space.
We are of the belief that more than any other age group children and youth should be earmarked for environmental education. They are the most open group. They can learn and internalize environmental responsibility. There is no doubt that any improvement on the environmental front and reversal of the current trend in destroying our nature can only be achieved if enough people change their attitudes and behaviors.
