Collaborative Census of Grazers in Turan Biosphere Reserve

PWHF’s Initiative for the Collaborative Census of Grazers in Turan Biosphere Reserve
Aiming the implementation of an efficient method for the census of Iran’s large herbivores, this summer the Persian Wildlife Heritage Foundation (PWHF) planned a collaborative census in the Turan National Park and Protected Area.
The program was in the form of collaboration between PWHF and the Department of Environment (DoE) Office of Semnan Province, conducted under the supervision of the Conservation of the Asiatic Cheetah Project (CACP), as a part of the Asiatic cheetah conservation program in Turan Biosphere Reserve. 15 volunteers participated in this program from June 30th to July 5th 2013.
The collaboration between volunteers and environmental guards was profitable for both sides. The volunteers benefitted from the guards’ experience and the guards became aware of the true value of their work by seeing eagerness of the volunteers. Moreover, the census went ahead more quickly and was finished two days ahead of schedule.
The large herbivores of Iran’s protected areas are counted annually with the effort of environmental guards and the provincial offices of the DoE. This requires great amount of time and energy and the results are fundamental in the conservation management and decision making, and even in the exploitation of available resources. A variety of census methods are being used worldwide; however, the most efficient and usable methods for Iran’s diverse habitats are yet to be found out.
The PWHF hopes to help improve the data available on the biological diversity. This would not happen without the help of the provincial offices of the DoE and the environmental guards. This goal could not have been achieved without the efforts and enthusiasm of volunteers, therefore the PWHF welcomes any form of contribution.
The report will handed to the CACP and Semnan Province’s DoE after being reviewed by volunteers and PWHF experts.
